 Focusing on underserved and minority students in maritime programs at local high schools

 Serving on San Jacinto College and Pasadena ISD Maritime Advisory Boards to provide guidance on curriculum, instructor qualifications, equipment and facility requirements

 The only group to have donated, and continue to maintain, a full mission bridge, state-of-the-art research and training simulator for maritime students and continuing education and research for Houston Pilots

 Helping educators increase pipeline of educated and credentialed people in the maritime industry

 Educating local youth on the benefits of employment in the maritime industry

 Host internships for cadets at state maritime colleges

Prerequisites

  • Currently enrolled at a federal/state maritime academy or San Jacinto Maritime pursuing a degree in Marine Transportation
  • Valid TWIC

Compensation

This is an unpaid position. Interns are responsible for transportation to and from the Houston Pilot office. Houston Pilots will provide transportation to facilities & meetings.

Duration

One to two weeks, depending on intern interests and goals.

Objective

Interns will gain an understanding of:


  • State commissioned Pilot duties and responsibilities
  • Pilot association working rules, organizational structure, decision making processes, and membership requirements
  • Deputy Pilot training program and Pilot continuing education programs
  • The different types of ships that visit the Port of Houston and the cargoes they carry
  • The types of facilities along the Houston Channel waterfront and their functions
  • The relationship of the Pilot with a ship's crew
  • Basic ship maneuvering in confined channels & docking/undocking at restricted berths
  • Shipping regulations and regulatory bodies that have jurisdiction within the port area
  • Roles of different port stakeholders (agents, shipowners, harbor tugs, terminal operators, etc.)

Intern Activities/Tasks

Interns will participate in or complete the following activities:


  • Ride a minimum of 8 ships transiting the Houston Ship channel (working hours will vary).
    • Maintain contact with Houston Pilot dispatch for vessel scheduling and transportation arrangements
  • Maintain log of ship rides completed that includes:
    • Pilot name
    • Vessel name
    • Vessel dimensions (Length x beam x draft)
    • Any operational restrictions imposed by Houston Pilots
    • Cargo
    • Dock name
  • Participate in visits to local facilities with Houston Pilots staff (work hours 0900-1500, M-F)

The intern will be required to perform a modest amount of manual labor. As such, the internmust be physically capable to perform such manual tasks as walking over slippery, uneven, or unstable surfaces; climbing up and down vertical ladders and stairways; lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying light objects; and crouching, kneeling, and stooping.

Attire

Appropriate casual work attire. If any personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, it will be supplied at the job site.

Identification

Form I-9 identification documents are required on the first day of work. A TWIC is required every workday.
